#4 Online News Layout [QUTOJ1]

This semester I am currently studying a unit called "Layout and design." Put simply, it's a unit studying.... err the layouts and designs of magazines and newspapers, traditionally print.

6 weeks later, I can't help but to see magazines and newspapers in a different light and noticing the layout of each publication. The chosen colours, pictures, typography used, the use of headlines and "kickers" and "pull-quotes" and the advertisements- it's phenomenal as to how much work goes into creating a single page!

But I sit and ponder as to why isn't online news being given the same attention? We all know how powerful and prominent online news is becoming in our society today and how often we jump on and start clicking and reading away... so what about it's presentation format?

Call me dyslexic- but everytime I jump onto a news website, I honestly don't know where to look! So many links, headings, logos and of course advertisements. So I try to avoid it as much as possible- now you can call me a bad journalism student.

But honestly, the next time you jump on a news page- take a browse- where do you start? Do you start with the stories with the pretty picture or the stories with the videos or do you click onto a heading? Personally, there seems to be alot going on with alot of gadgets and widgets flashing about distracting my eye, and more headings and subheadings....

Take a look at:

No I am not having a rant nor am I attacking any particular newspaper- but I hope it's not just me! Call me a neat freak- I just dislike clutter and dislike it when things get too busy!

And I'm not saying I don't read online news- quite on the contrary- as a twitter and facebook addict, I follow online media sources and receive alerts on there. And with a simple click- I'm updated!

But should you have any tips to cure my dyslexia (I'm kidding.... but seriously) feel free to forward them to me and I will be more than happy to read them!

"Newspaper design" also agree claiming online news websites do have alot of content to fill on one page outlining the common trends of an online news source such as the use of colour schemes, headers and banners and the integration of social media.

Check out the transformation from online news media content years ago in comparison to today...

Doesn't that just confuse you?! (excuse the language by the way). Click here to read more. They also agree that using a 2 column layout can be boring.. but it's super easy to read!

Happy browsing!
