Blog, "word herder" says it can be particularly useful when trying to illustrate a story about a particular area.
For example, the house of murdered Somerville House student, Sidonie Thompson, was illustrated using google maps along with this article on a glitch in google maps' system.
Other news wires are using google to "map the news" in a whole new way. The Seattle Times is using it to pinpoint news globally and locally.
The Detroit Free Press even created a "Where were you on 9/11" map for users to pinpoint their location and add their memories of the attack. Thousands of responses were uploaded from America and around the world.
Social Media Watch in the US also suggests Google Maps is another useful tool for journalists. From reporting crime, to providing fire coverage maps, Google Maps has become a beneficial tool for online journalism.
And with that my friends, I guess when you need to look up something (absolutely anything and everything) you really can just "google it."
