All I remember was seeing two giant buildings crumbling down, clouds of dust, bodies falling from the building and the look of horror and fear on everyone's faces as they tried to escape the terrifying scene. This was the first act of terrorism the world had ever seen. And it was horrific and mind numbing. #wherewereyou.
Today, marks the ten year anniversary of the 9/11 twin tower attacks. And with that, all of my social media streams were FILLED with posts mourning the dead, remembering the attacks, condemning the war and celebrating the freedom we have.
Technology sure has come a long way since those 10 years. Look at twitter- it has now become an imperative part on how we act and react in times of crisis.
Firstly, the Washington Post created a hashtag #wherewereyou for users to share their stories of what they can remember on the day of the attacks.
Another hashtag that was trending over the weekend was #neverforget. These tweets were all so touching and moving and goes to show the impact social media has on our society as a community.
And finally, a 9/11 memorial twitter account was created in order to remember the lives of those that were lost on the heartbreaking day the world changed forever.
I stop to think- what would it have been like 10 years ago if twitter existed? Would those trapped in the building tweet in terror of their their final moments? Would they have sent out a final message to those whom they love, before they forcefully plummeted to their death? Would have news organisations tweeted minutes after the attack had occured? The thought is jarring.
But it goes to show that it's times like these, the human race is to be united with peace, love and happiness in order to eliminate world full of negativity, terror and fear- even if it is via social media.
